We often think of “politics” at work as something to avoid.
But here’s a reframe: what if paying attention to power dynamics is actually a leadership skill?

Whether you're in a job, in between roles, or starting something new—understanding how decisions get made behind the scenes can be the difference between thriving and stalling.

And the truth is:
Political dynamics are always at play. What changes is whether we’re paying attention.

If you’re currently employed, this is your opportunity to start observing:

• Who actually influences decisions (hint: it’s not always who’s on the org chart)
• What happens in meetings after the meeting
• How people gain visibility or support for new ideas

Staying politically attuned doesn’t mean playing games. It means staying aware.

If you’re in transition, now is the perfect time to reflect:

• Were there signs that foreshadowed your exit?
• Were key stakeholders shifting?
• Did you have strong internal advocates—or were you quietly isolated?

Understanding the political landscape of your last role can give you valuable insight about what to look for—and what to avoid—in your next.

And if you’re starting a new job, make this part of your onboarding plan:

• Map out relationships beyond your direct team
• Notice how people communicate across departments
• Observe who speaks up—and who’s listened to

This isn’t just about surviving. It’s about stepping into your role with eyes wide open—and positioning yourself for long-term success.
